Universities have to promote freedom of expression and research environment to develop a society capable of facing the challenges of modern world. Sindh University Vice Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui stated this, while presiding over the 80th meeting of Advanced Studies and Research Board of the university. Deans of various faculties, senior professors from various institutes and departments as well as concerned officials of the university attended the meeting.

Mazhar said that the scholars could play a vital role in development of a profound society. He said that it is a good sign that the women scholars are also engaged in research programmes along with men in many important areas.

He said that it is high time that the scholars in many other fields, including science, should explore the areas through their research work.

The SU vice chancellor said that senior scholars should play their due role by providing help to the junior scholars in their research.

He hoped that the senior scholars would help their juniors in pursuing their objectives.

He said that superior academic culture should be a culture of sacrifices, adding that the scholars should deal with the people, including their juniors, with justice.

The meeting discussed a number of cases pertaining to registration of scholars for M.Phil and PhD research work in the faculties of Sciences, Arts, Commerce and Business Administration, Social Sciences, Education and Islamic Studies.

The meeting decided that research associates, working in various departments after getting two years experience in teaching, would be allowed to get admissions in PhD research programme.

The meeting also allowed registration of number of students in PhD research programme, which included two candidates in Chemistry, six in Analytical Chemistry, four in Education, one in Zoology, two in Information Technology, five in Biotechnology, one candidate in Pakistan Studies, one in Area Study, one in Islamic Studies and one candidate in Sindhi.

The meeting also approved the names of scholars who would work as supervisors/examiners for those 32 candidates who are doing their M.Phil and PhD research programme in various fields in the university.

The meeting while approving research topics for the M.Phil and PhD research programme allowed 16 candidates to start their research work in various areas under their supervisors and co-supervisors.

The meeting, in the light of a decision of a sub-committee appointed by the Advanced Studies and Research Board in its 79th meeting, decided that five scholars would be appointed to evaluate research work of every candidate from local as well as foreign universities.

It was also decided that for speedy research programmes the meeting of the board would be convened every month to resolve matters pertaining to appointment of examiners, approval of topics as well as approval for research work.
